Full-size excavator rental — South Shore & Montérégie
Benco rents full-size excavators — Hitachi and Caterpillar — to contractors, municipalities and project managers across the South Shore and Montérégie. With or without an operator, by the day, week or month, delivered straight to your jobsite from our Richelieu base. For tight spaces, see our mini excavator rental instead.
What a full-size hydraulic excavator is for
The full-size excavator — also called a hydraulic excavator — is the go-to machine for digging, loading and moving earth on a large-scale jobsite. Where a mini excavator suits narrow access and small volumes, a full-size excavator brings the power and reach that real civil-engineering and construction projects demand.
Our customers rent it for hands-on work: earthwork and grading of large surfaces, foundation excavation for residential and commercial buildings, digging drainage trenches and underground services (water main, sewer, French-drain footings), light demolition of structures and slabs, and site development of land, basins or embankments. With the right bucket or a specialized attachment, the same machine goes from digging to loading trucks without missing a beat.
How to choose the tonnage
Tonnage is the first thing to settle. It comes down to three factors: the digging depth and reach you need, the volume of material to move, and how easy the site is to access. For residential foundations, drainage or routine site development, a 13- to 20-tonne excavator offers the best blend of power, stability and cost. For large volumes or demolition, you move beyond 20 tonnes. If access is very tight (back yard, indoors, narrow driveway), a mini excavator is what you need, not a full-size machine. Describe your site to us: we'll recommend exactly the right excavator, so you don't pay for an oversized machine or hold up the job with one that's too small.

Request an operatorRental with or without an operator
Two options, depending on your crew and your jobsite.
Without an operator: you take the excavator and run it yourself. It's the economical option for the contractor who has qualified personnel used to handling a full-size excavator safely. With an operator (provided through Location Benoit): we supply an experienced operator who knows the machine and how it performs. This option makes sense when you need precision work without pulling your crew off other tasks, when you need to absorb a peak workload, or simply because a large machine calls for a steady hand. On a powerful excavator, a supplied operator also reduces risk and often speeds up the job.
Delivery & jobsite transport
A full-size excavator doesn't travel on the road: it rides on a float trailer. You don't have to deal with that logistics. From our base at 2252 rang de la Savane, Richelieu (J3L 8C2), we deliver the machine straight to your jobsite with transport matched to its weight, anywhere on the South Shore and in Montérégie, usually within 24 hours of confirmation, depending on fleet availability.
Short-term, long-term — or purchase?
Short-term rental (day, week, month) suits a one-off or seasonal need: a job to finish, a contract not yet confirmed, a spike in activity. Pricing is on a sliding scale — the longer the rental runs, the lower the hourly cost. Long-term rental (through Location Benoit) becomes worthwhile beyond a few months: a single supplier, maintenance included, guaranteed availability, without tying up your capital. As for buying, it pays off if the excavator logs a lot of hours each year or works recurring contracts — in that case Benco offers sales and financing. Many of our customers combine the two depending on the season and the project. Describe your situation: we'll tell you honestly what makes the most financial sense.
This page covers full-size excavators. For other equipment, see the machinery rental hub, our mini excavator rental (tight-access jobsites) or our forklift rental.

What size (tonnage) of excavator should I choose for my site?
The right tonnage depends on the digging depth and reach you need, the volume of material to move, and how easy the site is to access. For residential foundation excavation or routine drainage work, a 13- to 20-tonne excavator offers the best balance of power and mobility. For large volumes — retention basins, infrastructure, demolition — you move up to 20 tonnes and beyond. Tight spaces, on the other hand, call for a mini excavator, a separate category (see our dedicated page). Describe your site and we'll recommend exactly the right machine — neither oversized nor too small.
Do you rent the excavator with or without an operator?
Both. Without an operator, you take the machine if you have qualified personnel to run it safely. With an operator — provided through Location Benoit — we supply an experienced operator who knows the excavator and how to get the most out of it, ideal for precision work or a peak workload without tying up your own crew. On a large excavator, a supplied operator also avoids the risks that come with a powerful machine in untrained hands.
Do I need a permit or special transport for a large excavator?
A full-size excavator isn't driven on the road: it's hauled on a float trailer. There's no need to handle the logistics yourself — we deliver the machine straight to your jobsite with transport equipment matched to its weight. Operating it on site doesn't require a road permit, but the machine must be run by a trained person (or by our operator under the with-operator option).
What's the delivery time on the South Shore?
From our Richelieu base (2252 rang de la Savane), we deliver the excavator to jobsites across the South Shore and Montérégie, usually within 24 hours of confirmation, depending on fleet availability. The lead time and transport cost depend on the area — request a quote and we'll confirm quickly.
How does pricing work — by the day, week or month?
You rent by the day, week or month, with volume pricing: the longer the rental, the lower the hourly cost. For a one-off job, short-term rental is the most flexible; for a job lasting several months, long-term rental (through Location Benoit) is usually more cost-effective, maintenance included. The rate depends on the tonnage and the option you choose (with or without an operator) — we provide a clear quote on request.
